Fire protection is usually split into two families. Passive protection — compartmentation, fire-rated materials, intumescent coatings — is built into the structure and works without activation. Active protection — sprinklers, gaseous systems, detection — senses a condition and responds.

Two roles, one goal

  • Passive: slows spread and buys time; always present, no trigger.
  • Active: detects and suppresses; requires sensing and delivery.

Material-level response sits between the two: it is built into the material like passive protection, but it responds to a trigger — heat — like active protection. The response is local and does not depend on room-level detection or plumbing.
