Fire safety in the built environment is governed by an ecosystem of codes and standards. Understanding a few terms helps set honest expectations for any new technology — including ours.

A quick glossary

• Code: an adopted, enforceable requirement (e.g. via NFPA or ICC).
• Standard: a consensus document that a code may reference.
• Listed: evaluated by a recognized lab (e.g. UL) to a specific standard.
• Certified: shown to meet a standard’s requirements.

These terms are specific. A product is not “UL listed” or “NFPA compliant” until it has actually been evaluated to the relevant standard. Being precise here is a matter of trust.
