The cost of a fire is rarely just the burned asset. It includes downtime, data or production loss, recovery, and — for critical infrastructure — knock-on effects that dwarf the initial damage. That is why prevention and early response are treated as investments, not expenses.

Three cost curves

  • Prevention: lowest cost, highest leverage — stop or limit ignition.
  • Response: moderate cost — limit escalation and loss.
  • Recovery: highest cost — rebuild, replace, and restore continuity.

A response layer engineered into materials aims to shift loss from the expensive recovery curve toward the cheaper prevention-and-response curves — by acting locally, early, before a small thermal event becomes a larger fire event.
